Tribes in India - Gujarat
February 3 -18 and November 6-21, 2027
Our Gujarat tour visits tribal villages of the state of Gujarat, located in the far western region of India. In fact, Gujarat is India’s westernmost state. It has a diverse terrain and several sacred sites.
Gujarat villages are rich with detailed textiles still produced by traditional methods. The interaction of peoples: invaders, indigenous tribes, traders and explorers – has led to the creation of designs legendary for their vitality, color and intricacy.
Enjoy and appreciate the amazing textiles! See demonstrations of both traditional and sophisticated weaving methods as well as hand-embroidery. The women and children wear these intricate and colorful textiles as their everyday clothes.
Visit the Calico Museum of Textiles. Its’ collection of Indian textiles is considered by many to be the finest and most comprehensive in the world.
In addition, spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi’s base from 1917 to 1930 was Sabarmati Ashram, in Ahmedabad, where his house is kept on display.
Diverse Tribal Groups
Experience a diversity of tribal groups in the villages of Gujarat on this tour.
Meet and interact with textile families and observe their traditional techniques and way of life. The November tour includes a tribal festival.
Although we are traveling in a tribal region, hotels are nice, the drives are not long and the travel is relatively easy. In fact, of all our tours into tribal regions of India, our Gujarat tour is the most comfortable experience.
This is truly a slice-of-life experience. Anyone interested in indigenous culture, textiles and crafts and immersion into traditional village life will appreciate this authentic experience in Gujarat.
