A short drive to the Khatyn Memorial, symbolic sculptural composition and monuments to commemorate Belarusian citizens who died during World War II. The memorial is built on the place of the burnt down village of Khatyn. The memorial is very beautifully created and a moving experience to hear the stories of these people while standing at the site.
We continue to Vitebsk, stopping en-route for lunch at a local restaurant.
Our arrival in Vitebsk will be at approx 4 pm. Check into the hotel and some free time. You may enjoy strolling around the picturesque area surrounding the hotel.
In the morning, we drive along Castle Street, the shortest street in Vitebsk, to cross the Kirov Bridge over the Western Dvina River. From the bridge we enjoy a wonderful view of the recently reconstructed Assumption Cathedral with its Golden Domes, the highest church and architectural dominant of the city.
We will then tour the city’s main attractions including: the 12th century Annunciation church (rebuilt is the 14th and 17th centuries; destroyed by the communist administration in 1961 and restored in 1992), high and slender monument to the 100th anniversary of 1812 war with Napoleon built of red granite and crowned with a two-headed eagle, Governor’s House in classical style and a number of other fascinating buildings and monuments.
You will find delight in spotting a monument to Mark Chagall depicting him captivated by his dreams and a tiny figure of a flying woman symbolizing his wife Bella, as well as a building of the famous Vitebsk People’s Art School encouraged by Mark Chagall and his opponent, world famous artist Kazimir Malefic. Some other monuments are to be discovered along the embankments of the Western Dvina.
This afternoon a visit to the Art-Centre of Marc Chagall to see the artist’s original works (colored lithographs, xylographs, etchings with famous images: flying lovers, fiddler on the roof, acrobats, animals and birds). We also visit Museum-House of Marc Chagall, where the artist spent his childhood and youth. The interior of the house was recreated thanks to the artist’s sketches, family photographs, pictures made in Germany, Paris and US. You probably never guessed he was from Belarus!
Polotsk, one of the most ancient cities of the Eastern Slavs, is considered the spiritual center of Belarus. An archaeological expedition of the Institute of History of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus suggests that Polotsk already existed in the first half of the 9th century. The Norse sagas describe the city as the most heavily fortified in all of Rus.
On arrival, we shall embark on a city tour of Polotsk including a visit to the Savior Ephrosiniya Convent where one can see miracle-working relics of the Saint that had been kept for more than 900 years, St. Sophia Cathedral and other considerable buildings of the past.
On the return to Minsk, drive through the city brings us to the National Library of Belarus, which is the main information and cultural centre of the country. Its depository collections include 8 million items of various media. More than 90 thousand citizens of Belarus are library users who annually request 3.5 million documents. Every day, the library is visited by more than 2,200 people. We will go up in the panoramic elevator to the observation platform at the height of 72 meters. The marvelous panorama of Minsk and the suburb is very impressive in any season. Photographing and filming are allowed.
Our first stop will be at Mir where we visit the Mir Castle, an example of a purely Belarusian stone defensive architecture of the 16th century. We then go across the way to the old town of Mir which is quaint and picturesque. No historic sites to see, just enjoy the charm of this slice-of-life moment. A few minutes free time to stroll about on your own and photograph.
Afterwards, we continue the drive to Nesvizh (pronounced Yesvishk). We visit the magnificent Catholic Cathedral of the Divine Body of the Christ built in 1593 to a design of Italian architect Yan Mariya Bernardoni. The Cathedral is famous for a family burial-vault of the many generations of the Radziwills and its frescoes.
Then it is about a five-minute pleasant walk along the river to Nesvizh Palace (the residence of the Radzivills). We tour the palace museum and visit the park. The Palace and Park Ensemble are included in the Heritage List of UNESCO monuments.
Lunch at the restaurant in Nesvizh Palace and return to Minsk.
Transfer to the airport or bus station.
